Let’s look at the specifications of the diode 1N4007, its pinout and nearest equivalents for replacement. It is a modern low-power rectifier device, capable of passing through itself a fairly large direct current (up to 1 A) and voltage (up to 1000 V). It has the best performance in its 1n400x series. Made of silicon with a diffuse junction design. Meets the latest requirements of lead-free Euro standard “RoHS” and flammability class UL94-V0.
It should be noted that this diode is often called in4007 but there is no such device due to the fact that the first number “1” in the name is confused with the letter “i”.
Compactness, low cost and good parameters, made it the basis in a variety of diode assemblies with rectifying purpose. It is often used in portable power supplies in public networks (220V), mobile gadget chargers and LED lighting fixtures. It is recommended for use in almost all applications without high frequency and timing requirements.
These diodes are made in modern plastic cylindrical packages DO-41 and A-405 for hole mounting on the board, it is them that we will consider the pinout 1N4007. The latter is slightly smaller in size. The cathode side is marked with a light bar. The two long wire leads are of the axial type and in addition to their main purpose they are used for cooling the device.
The 1n4007 is also available in a DO-214AC smd package for surface mounting on a board. They are virtually indistinguishable from their “brethren” except for the plastic packaging.
Diode 1n4007 in UDO-41 package is marked in accordance with the requirements of American system EIA370 (JEDEC). The symbols “1N” identify the diode. And the last four digits “4007” are the registration number in this standard. SMD devices in a DO-214AC package have “M7” printed on the outside. Several thin stripes indicate the side with the cathode lead.
Technical parameters of 1n4007 allow classifying it as a specialized rectifier diode, designed for high AC voltage networks with operating frequency up to 60 Hz. Maximum permissible operation values of the device are given in the technical description with due regard to this peculiarity.
Permissible limit values
Let’s look at the main permissible specs for 1N4007:
- The peak reverse pulse voltage (VRRM) is up to 1000 V;
- maximum forward rectified current (IO) up to 1 A;
- operating temperature range (TJ) from -65 to + 175°C.
These are given in the datasheet, taking into account the ambient temperature (TA) not exceeding +25°C (if no other data are available).
It is worth bearing in mind that the current in the capacitive load circuit must be 20% less than for inductive and resistive loads. This is one of the properties of the device in question, setting its operating mode.
Diode 1n4007 is featured by high overloading ability and low voltage drop across the junction (UF) – up to 1,1 V (at IO to 1A). Thus, the maximum instantaneous pulse current (IFSM), lasting 8.3 seconds, can reach 30 A.
The typical junction capacitance (CT) does not exceed 15 pF. This figure is determined at a frequency of 1 MHz and a constant voltage of 4 V. Theoretically, such speed of operation is unacceptable for rectifier diodes, so their use in high-frequency circuits is not regulated.
Leakage current does not exceed 5 μA. But with an increase in ambient temperature (TA), especially at temperatures above +75 ° C, it can increase up to 50 μA. In this case, all the manufacturer’s declared values deteriorate as well. Therefore, in order to achieve efficient operation it is necessary to observe the standard 30% margin of parameters. It is also desirable to arrange cooling, for example, with a special conductive thermowell.
For 1N4007 (v4007) it is quite difficult to find an equivalent. Because of its cheapness and availability, it has ousted almost all of its competitors from the market. However, as a replacement you can recommend more modern:

Russian manufacturer LLC “Saransk Precision Instruments Plant” produces 1n4007 diode equivalents:
- KD258D (KD-29A).
Of course, they do not meet the lead-free standards, but the specifications are very similar. The cost of KD258D is relatively high, so the feasibility of its use as an alternative is very doubtful.
